The process of amending the voter list has reached its final stage before the Bihar assembly elections. The last date for adding claims to add names to the draft voter list ends on Monday. According to the Election Commission, so far more than 33,000 people have applied to add their names, while more than 2 lakh applications have been received to remove the names.
7.24 crore verification of voters
According to the report of the news agency, the draft voter list was published on August 1 and people were given the opportunity to register claim and objection by 1 September. The Election Commission said that out of 7.24 crore voters in the state, 99.11% people have submitted their documents for verification.
Political parties and people have the right under the Election Act that they can object to the names included in the voter list which they consider wrong. Similarly, those whose name is not in the list but they consider themselves as eligible, they can claim to get the name added.
Hearing will be held in Supreme Court
At present, the hearing in this case is also going on in the Supreme Court. Many parties including Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have filed a petition demanding to extend the deadline. The apex court will hear this on Monday. The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to accept the Aadhaar card or other 11 documents listed by the Commission to add names.
The Election Commission says that it is completing the special intensive revision (SIR) process in a transparent manner and it should be trusted. The Commission also clarified that the final voter list will be published on 30 September. It is likely that assembly elections in Bihar will be held in November. In this entire process, booth-level agents have so far registered 25 claims to add names and 103 claims to remove.
