‘Fight your political battle outside this court’, Supreme Court said during hearing a petition against Mamta Banerjee

The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition for criminal contempt filed against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, warned on Monday (July 21, 2025) not to politicize judicial proceedings. The petition said that CM Mamta Banerjee made an abusive statements after the Supreme Court pronounced the decision to cancel the teacher recruitment.

A bench of Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai and Vinod Chandran of Justice said during hearing a petition filed against Mamata Banerjee on the court’s decision in the teacher recruitment scam case, ‘Please fight your political battle outside this court.’

The bench made this comment while hearing a petition filed on behalf of a public charitable trust called Atmadeep. It has been alleged in the petition that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made objectionable statements after the Supreme Court’s decision which weakens the authority of the judiciary.

Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the petitioner, urged the bench to postpone the hearing, saying that the Attorney General was sent a request to the Attorney General to start criminal contempt proceedings.

Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai said, ‘Are you so sure that you will get consent? Do not try to politicize before the court, you should fight your political battle elsewhere.

The bench adjourned the hearing of the case for four weeks. This petition is related to the decision given in April this year, in which the Supreme Court upheld the order of the Calcutta High Court in which about 25,000 appointments made by the West Bengal School Services Commission in 2016 were declared invalid. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee allegedly made some critical comments on this decision.
