Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud bought the Mercedes Benz E-220 car. A Supreme Court official has written a letter to the Delhi Transport Commissioner and appealed to allotment a special registration number for his car soon. This letter has been written by Deputy Registrar (Transport) on 28 July 2025.
Demand to allot number as soon as possible
A number was given in a letter to the Transport Commissioner and demanded to be allotted. The on-road price of Mercedes Benz E-200 in Delhi is between Rs 90 lakh and Rs 95 lakh. India’s 50th Chief Justice DY Chandrachud retired on November 8, 2024.
He vacated his government residence in Delhi on Saturday (2 August 2025). There was also a lot of controversy about not vacating the house on their behalf. The former CJI had given some personal reasons behind the delay and said that the Supreme Court administration and the Chief Justice were informed about it.
Eastern Chief Justice gave historical decisions on many issues
The former Chief Justice gave a historic decision on many cases including Article 370, cancellation of Election Bond Scheme, Decision on Private Property, Madrasa Act, caste -based discrimination in jails during their tenure. He was part of 38 Constitution Bench during his eight -year tenure as Justice of Supreme Court.
The former CJI had before retiring that the tradition of comparing judges to God is dangerous because the responsibility of judges is to work in the interest of the common people. His statement was very much discussed across the country. He had said, “Often we are addressed by calling us honor or Lordship or Ladishapp. When people tell the court a temple of justice, there is a big danger in it. There is a big danger that we should consider ourselves as God sitting in those temples.”
