The 14th Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from the post of Vice President on the first day of the onset of the monsoon session. In his resigning letter sent to President Draupadi Murmu, health reasons have been cited behind it.
Jagdeep Dhankhar’s entire life is an inspirational journey, in which he traveled from an ordinary rural background to the post of Vice President of India. He was born on 18 May 1951 in Kithana village in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan.
Travel from government school to peak
He got his early education from the government primary school in the village. After this, in class 6, he enrolled in the Government Secondary School in Ghadhana village, which was 4-5 km from his village. He used to go to school every day walking on foot with other children.
After this, in the year 1962, he succeeded in the entrance examination of Chittorgarh Sainik School and enrolled on the entire merit scholarship in class 5. From there, he passed the Indian School Certificate Examination, which was recognized from the University of Cambridge. After this, he earned a BSc Honors degree in Physics from Maharaja College, Jaipur, which was affiliated to the University of Rajasthan.
Career made in advocacy
While stepping into the field of advocacy, he completed his LLB from Rajasthan University in 1978-79. On 10 November 1979, he was registered as a lawyer in the Rajasthan Bar Council. On 27 March 1990, the Rajasthan High Court gave him the status of Senior Advocate. He then started practice as a lawyer in the Supreme Court and specialized in areas like steel, coal, mining and international commercial mediation.
Entry in politics through Janata Dal
After this, he entered politics through Janata Dal. He was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha from Jhunjhunu in 1989 on Janata Dal ticket and became Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990. After this, he joined the Congress party. In 1993, he was elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Kishangarh constituency in Ajmer district. From 1993 to 1998, he was a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly and included many important committees. In 2003, Jagdeep Dhankar took membership of BJP.
On 30 July 2019, he was appointed the Governor of West Bengal, where he served till 18 July 2022. After this he became the 14th Vice President of India. Jagdeep Dhankhar’s life shows that with dedication, education and hard work, any person can reach the highest positions of the country.
