Father Chaudhary Maturam was active in politics. He was one of the founding members of the Congress in Rohtak. He was one of the early people to join Arya Samaj.
Arya Samaj also had influence on Ranbir’s childhood and education. After passing BA from Ramjas College, Delhi in 1937, he got into thinking that he should do a job, advocate or farming.

When the Meo community started going to Pakistan, he went to Mahatma Gandhi After independence, riots started in Mewat i.e. Meo dominated areas adjoining Haryana, Rajasthan and UP. It is said that the people of the Meo community were originally from the Rajput, Jat, Ahir and Meena, but they adopted Islam between the 12th century. Due to the riots, people from the Meo community decided to go to Pakistan.
Chaudhary Yasin Khan, a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly and a resident of Mewat, was against the decision of Mewatis. He informed Chaudhary Ranbir Singh about this.
Ranbir Singh reached Mahatma Gandhi with Yasin. On 19 December 1947, Gandhi reached Mewat with him. Gandhi said- ‘Meo Kaum is the backbone of Hindustan. Do not be afraid of anyone. It is our responsibility for your safety from today.
Gandhi’s appeal had an impact and people changed the decision to go to Pakistan. The Mewat area still has a large population of the Meo community. Ranbir Singh had a strong influence in these areas.
The Lok Sabha elections were held for the first time in 1952. Ranbir won from Rohtak and reached the Lok Sabha. In 1957, he was elected from Rohtak for the second time. Why Ranbir Singh could not become CM even after Indira’s choice In 1966, Haryana became a new state from Punjab and became a new state. There were three contenders for the post of Chief Minister- Ranbir Singh, Bhagwat Dayal Sharma and Rao Birendra Singh.
Ranbir Singh writes in his autobiography ‘Swaraj’s voice’- ‘People came to me and started saying,’ How are you sitting? You are the most vulnerable. Has been a senior minister in Punjab. Who is more qualified than you? I replied- all are worthy. I have not run away for power till date. Why should I do now? ‘
Ranbir writes in autobiography- ‘I kept looking at everything in a neutral manner. Indira Gandhi wanted to make me the Chief Minister in view of my seniority and whatever I did for the country. Gulzari Lal Nanda was the Home Minister at that time. He was looking into the matters of Punjab-Haryana. Indira used to listen to them. He put his full emphasis in making Bhagwat Dayal the Chief Minister.
In this way Bhagwat Dayal Sharma became the first CM of Haryana and Ranbir Singh Cabinet Minister. Ranbir Singh was 52 years old then. He started feeling that he would not be able to do politics for long.

Elder son could not win elections, younger son became Chief Minister 2 times In the year 1972, the Congress was torn apart. Congress (R) i.e. Indira’s faction and Congress (O) i.e. faction of syndicate leaders. There was then a group of powerful leaders within the Congress, which the media named Syndicate.
Assembly elections were held in Haryana this year. Ranbir fielded elder son Pratap Singh from Kiloi seat in Rohtak district on Congress (R) ticket, but he lost. After a few years, he distanced himself from politics.
Here, after completing his studies of younger son Bhupendra Advocacy, Rohtak started practicing in court. He joined Congress during college. After this, he became the Chief Minister of the state 2 times. Bhupendra Hooda’s son Deepender Hooda is currently an MP from Rohtak.
