Electricity rates in Haryana will be decided today. Amid civic elections, Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) has called a meeting of the State Advisory Committee (SAC). In this, a big decision can be taken by discussing electricity rates and revenue deficit.
,
The Haryana government has not increased electricity rates since 2019. Meanwhile, power distribution companies in Haryana want to increase the electricity fee by calling for losses.
North Haryana Electricity Distribution Corporation Limited (UHBVNL) and South Haryana Electricity Distribution Corporation Limited (DHBVNL) have asked for Rs 4520 crore for the total revenue requirement (ARR) for 2025-26.
These 4 important issues will be discussed in the meeting …
1. Cut or increase in electricity rates The electricity fee has not been increased in the state since 2019. This has increased the losses of power distribution companies. On this, HERC has asked power companies to give any concrete planning to meet the revenue deficit of Rs 4520 crore.
2. Emphasis on the improvement of electricity sector The power tariff for the upcoming financial year will be finalized in the meeting led by Herc Chairman Nand Lal Sharma. Also, financial stability of power distribution companies, safety of consumer interests and reforms in the power sector of Haryana will be discussed.
3. Review of thermal power plants of the state The meeting will discuss IT-based solutions to reduce technical and commercial losses, promote smart metering and consumer grievance. In addition, the efficiency of thermal power plants of Haryana will be reviewed to ensure compliance with the instructions to improve their work.
4. PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme Evaluation The meeting will evaluate the progress made under the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Ghar Free Power Scheme (Central Solar Roof Yojana), so that the use of renewable energy in the state can be rapidly enhanced. The decision taken in this meeting will be related to electricity tariffs, operating improvements of distribution companies and improving consumer services in Haryana.
This is the structure of the committee The State Advisory Committee (SAC) of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) consists of all the chief officers associated with the department. These include DHBVNL, UHBVNL, HPGCL, Managing Director of HVPNL and Director General of New and Renewable Energy Department in the Government of Haryana.
Apart from these, this committee also consists of representatives of state government officials, industry, commerce, academics, research, consumers, labor and NGOs. The term of the committee is 3 years. The meetings of this committee are chaired by the chairman of HERC. The purpose of these meetings is to finalize other arrangements including power tariffs.
Government has decided to recover FSA The Haryana government has extended the fuel surcharge adjustment (FSA) on electricity to 2026. With this, people will have to pay 47 paise per unit on electricity bill. People will have to pay an additional Rs 94.47 on the 201 unit electricity bill by next year.
The government has continued this recovery due to the increasing defaulting amount on the Electricity Corporation. However, the government had earlier abolished it when the Electricity Corporation came in benefit. However, FSA was implemented in April 2023 when there was a deficit. It is now being extended continuously.
