Holika Dahan Mythology
According to Hindu Puranas, a king named Hiranyakashipu wished to be immortal, like many asuras. To fulfill this wish, he did harsh penance to get a boon from Brahma ji. Pleased, Brahma ji fulfilled his five desires as a boon to Hiranyakashipu: that he would not die at the hands of any creature made by Brahma, that he will not be destroyed by day or night, with any weapon, on or outside, in or outside, inside or outside, it will not die by men or animals, gods or asuras, he should be unmatched, that he should never have the power to end.
After receiving the boon, Hiranyakashipu felt invincible. Anyone who objected to his domination, punished and killed them all. Hiranyakashipu had a son Prahlad. Prahlad refused to worship his father as a deity. He continued to believe in Vishnu and worship him.
Prahlada’s faith in Lord Vishnu made Hiranyakashipu angry, and he made several attempts to kill Prahlad, all of which failed. In these efforts, once, King Hiranyakashipu’s sister Holika supported her brother to kill Prahlad. According to the Vishnu Purana, Holika had received such a clothes in a boon from Brahmaji who could never burn with fire. Just Holika, after wearing the same clothes, sat in the fire to burn Prahlad. As soon as Prahlada chanting the name of Lord Vishnu, Holika’s fire came over Prahlad and he survived, while Holika was consumed.
