US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet on Friday (15 August 2025). The two leaders are going to meet in Alaska, which used to be a part of Russia. The proposed meeting of Trump-Putin surprised everyone as Trump was threatening by last week that if Moscow does not end the Ukraine war by August 8, he would impose additional restrictions on it.
Why is the meeting in Alaska win for Putin?
US President Trump agreed to meet Putin face to face despite these threats. Putin’s meeting with Trump while facing diplomatic isolation is also considered a big diplomatic victory for Russia. Trump has invited him to American soil amid threats to boycott Russia internationally.
Jailonski will not attend the meeting
Apart from this, Trump also agreed to meet Putin without Ukrainian President Volodimir Jailonsky. This clearly means that the Ukraine ceasefire proposal will be discussed between the US and Russia without the Ukrainian representation. It is being considered as a major victory of Putin because since Trump has talked about meeting Putin, Jailonsky has been saying that if no representative of Ukraine is involved in the meeting, he will not accept the decision taken in this meeting. The biggest thing is that Putin himself selected the place where the heads of state are going to meet.
Putin will go to America despite international warrant
Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit the US at a time when the arrest warrant against him is going on by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Ever since the ICC has issued a warrant against Putin, he has not visited any country. In this context, the visit of Alaska is considered very important for Putin.
According to a report by Russian news agency TASS, Putin will be the first Russian President to travel to Alaska. Alaska is located on the northwest end of the North American continent and is the largest state in the US in terms of area, which is 18 per cent of the total area here. The lowest distance between Russia and Alaska is about 55 miles (88 km).
