A 22 -year -old student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay jumped from the roof of the hostel in Powai and committed suicide. The student’s name was Rohit Sinha and he was a resident of Delhi. He was a final year student of Meta Science in IIT Bombay.

The incident took place on Saturday night. When Rohit jumped from the 10th floor of the hostel at around 2:30 pm. At the same time, another student living in the hostel was talking on mobile on the roof. After this, Rohit was rushed to Hiranandani Hospital with the help of other students, where doctors declared him dead.

Police said no suicide note has been found from Rohit. Mobile phones are being investigated for the deceased. Efforts are being made to find out the reasons for suicide by investigating about it on social media too.

Police has sent the body for postmortem. The family and friends of the deceased student are also being talked about, so that the cause of suicide can be ascertained. The police have registered a case of accidental death in the case and started investigation.

13 IIT students commit suicide since 2024 13 students studying in IIT from January 2024 to August 2025 have committed suicide. The maximum four suicide IITs took place in Kharagpur. This was followed by a 10 -member committee formed, which paid attention to mental health and suicide prevention. In May 2025, the Supreme Court investigated the situation of filing an FIR in suicide cases in IIT Kharagpur and Kota and described it as a harassment pattern.

According to RTI data, there were a total of 115 suicide cases in IITs from 2005 to 2024, out of which 37 cases took place between 2019-2024. In 2024, IIT has made policy reforms like relaxation and long holidays to reduce mental pressure.
