There is continuous snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Traffic on 340 roads in Himachal has been closed. There is more than two and a half feet of snow in Chitkul, due to which many tourists are stuck.

Srinagar-Leh road is closed due to snowfall in Kashmir. Kashmir University exams have been cancelled. About 1800 vehicles are stuck. At many places including Ganderbal, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Gund, Baramulla, the temperature has reached minus 10 to 22 degrees.

There was snowfall up to one foot here, due to which about 2 thousand tourists got stuck at different places. Local Kashmiris opened the doors of houses and mosques. They were given a place to stay, blankets and quilts along with hot food items.

There is an orange alert of avalanche (snow collapse) at a height of more than 3 thousand meters in the next 24 hours in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Badrinath National Highway is closed between Pandukeshwar-Badrinath due to snowfall.

More than a thousand vehicles got stuck in traffic jam in Solang, Manali, Himachal Pradesh.

More than 10cm snowfall in 5 districts of Himachal In Himachal, there has been 14.9 cm fresh snowfall in Kalpa, 14.5 in Kufri, 12 in Pooh, 12 in Murang, 10 in Khadrala, 8.5 in Sangla, 8 in Keylong, 1.6 cm in Kukmaseri. Due to this, the minimum temperature has been recorded 1 to 5 degrees Celsius lower than normal.

Tourists said- Gave us a place in the mosque, will always remember us

  • Rajesh Rajput, one of the nine tourists stranded in Doodhpakhri in Kashmir, told Bhaskar that we were stuck in the snowfall for 4 hours. The road was full of snow. Couldn’t drive. As it became evening and the temperature started falling, Anees Ahmed and his family members came and took us along. I will always remember the care he took for us.
  • In Gund villages of Kashmir, about 1 thousand tourists are staying in the houses of various local people for two days. Here Jamia Masjid was also opened for tourists. Kavita Moitri, who stayed here with her family, told that we were returning from Sonamarg, when we got stuck in snowfall. People gave us space in the mosque. Then fed hot Tehri. It was memorable.
  • Gund resident Sheikh Anees said that it started snowing on Friday afternoon. People who were returning from Sonamarg got stuck. 10 local families came together to help. We reached the tourists. Took them out of the vehicles and brought them home. He was sent to Srinagar on Saturday evening. Tourists are still staying in 15-16 houses in Gund.

Tourists decreased in Ladakh this year, increased in Kashmir 5.25 lakh tourists had reached Ladakh in 2023. In 2024, this figure will come down to 3.75 lakh. According to Ladakh Tourism Department, 2.10 crore tourists came to Jammu and Kashmir in 2023. The number will increase to 2.11 crore in 2024.

January 2: Snowfall in 3 states, fog in North-East

  • There will be dense fog in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura.
  • There will be a cold wave in the states of Northern India, due to which the temperature will fall.
  • Snowfall will continue in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
