In Bangladesh, Hindu businessman was beaten to death by a slab of concrete

In the old area of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, a Hindu businessman Lal Chand Sohag was beaten to death by a mob. After the video of the incident went viral, heavy protests have started across the country. Hundreds of students of the capital’s major university have come out on the streets and are shouting slogans against the inaction of the interim government.

According to the news agency PTI, the video of the incident is going viral, in the video it can be seen that the attackers beat Sohag fiercely with concrete slabs. And kept beating until he died. The limits of cruelty did not stop here, the attackers appeared dancing on his body. The incident took place in front of Mitford Hospital, where he was attacked in broad daylight. It is alleged that the attackers were forcibly recovering people.

According to Bangladesh’s first ALO newspaper, Lal Chand’s sister Manjuara Begum has filed a murder case at Kotwali police station, in which 15–20 unidentified people have also been accused along with 19 named accused. The police have so far arrested 5 people, out of which two have also found illegal weapons.

After this incident, students of several institutes including BRAC University, NSU, East West University and Dhaka University took to the streets and demonstrated against the failure of the government. ‘Who gave these poor people the right to murder? As the campus echoed with slogans.

BNP worker involved in the crime

Bedinuse 24 said former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was allegedly killed by a group of Youth Front activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Lal Chand himself was also a former BNP worker. However, the party said that it has immediately expelled 4 accused of lynching from the party.

Increasing crowd violence and attacks on minorities

The incidents of mob violence in Bangladesh have increased rapidly since the violent movement against former PM Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024. Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Ekta Parishad said on 10 July that 2442 incidents took place against minorities in the last 330 days from August 4, 2024 i.e. in the last 330 days. These include murder, sexual assault on women, attacks on religious places, possession of properties.
