Former Indian cricketer Murali Karthik has expressed disappointment about the captaincy of Shubman Gill in the first Test match played against England at Headingley, Leeds. India could not save the target of 371 runs in the fourth innings and lost the match by five wickets. Karthik said that there was a lack of authority in Gill’s captaincy and many players were seen interfering in decisions during the match. He insisted that the advice of senior players is important, but the final decision on the field is to be taken by the captain.
What did Murali Karthik say
He said, ‘We can find excuses, but the truth is that India scored 835 runs, a bowler took five wickets, yet we lost the match by five wickets. I felt as if there are many captains in the team. I could not understand this. Sometimes KL Rahul was suggesting, sometimes Rishabh Pant was saying something, Shubman Gill was also doing, so who is the real captain? I could not understand this sign. Is a captain. It is fine if senior players sometimes suggest about fielding settings, but when it happens again and again, it is not a good sign.

Former England player also advised
Former England captain Nasir Hussain also commented on Shubman Gill’s captaincy and said that Gill did not show an on-field presence like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli. Despite scoring a century of five Indian batsmen, India could not save the target of 371 runs and England won the match by five wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Hussain said, ‘I saw a captain who was trying to find himself. Shubman did not show an aura like Rohit or Virat. I felt that he was following the ball, not taking decisions by himself. When Rohit or Kohli used to captain, looking at the field, I immediately understood who is the captain. But when I saw in this match, it felt like there are two or three captains. Like a ‘Captaincy Committee’.
