The petitioner has said that India should be changed to Republic of India.

On February 17, a petition was heard in the Delhi High Court to change the English name of India from India or Hindustan.

Justice Sachin Dutta extended the time to file a reply to the central government on the petition. In the hearing held on 4 February, the Center had demanded to extend the time to file a reply.

In fact, a person named Namah, who hails from Delhi (Ghaziabad), has demanded amendment in Article 1 of the Constitution. He says that India (English), which is India, should change it to the Union of India or India.

Namah also filed a petition in the High Court demanding the government to direct a decision on its representation. In 2020, the Supreme Court directed that this petition should be considered as a representation and should be presented to the concerned Ministry.

India’s name should be one. It has many names right now. Such as Republic of India, India, India, Republic of India, etc. There should not be so many names. There are different names on separate paper. The ‘Government of India’ is written on the Aadhaar card. ‘Union of India’ on driving license, ‘Republic of India’ is written on passport. This causes confusion.

In 1948, the name of India was also opposed in the Constituent Assembly. The petitioner says that the British used to call slaves as Indians. He named India in English. On 15 November 1948, while arguing the draft of Article-1 of the Constitution, M. Anantashyanam Ayyangar and Seth Govind Das strongly opposed the name of the country to name India in English. He suggested the names of India, India and Hindustan in English instead of India. But at that time it was not taken care of. Now the court should direct the Central Government to rectify this mistake.
