The ECB started the Pataudi Trophy for the India-England Test series in 2007, but was renamed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy before the current series of five matches began. This decision was criticized by cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar. Farooq Engineer is also disappointed with this decision but with this he also feels that the achievements of Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson are undisputed. Tendulkar approached ECB, after which the domestic board decided to give Pataudi medal to the captain of the team that won the series.

Tiger was my very good friend

Farooq Engineer, who lives in Manchester, said, ‘Tiger Pataudi was my very good friend. I was very good colleague. We played a lot of Test matches together. I was most happy when the trophy was named after him in 2007. I am very disappointed that Pataudi’s name was removed. I want Tiger’s name to be related to this trophy, but instead it was decided to name the trophy in the name of Sachin and Anderson, who are sports veterans.

Farooq Engineer said, ‘Its (starting the Pataudi medal) was later thought about. They should have announced this in the beginning, there would have been more credibility than this, but at least they did something. Hopefully, the name Pataudi will always be connected to it. The Pataudi family has a deep connection with India-England cricket. Both Ifikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son Mansoor captained India and both played county cricket in England.

Hope Sharmila Tagore will give a medal

On the other hand, Tendulkar is the highest run -scorer in Test cricket. James Anderson has taken the most wickets in Tests as a fast bowler. The engineer said, ‘The achievements of Tendulkar and Anderson cannot be questioned. There are two aspects of this story. He has named the medal after Pataudi, which is a very thoughtful decision. He said, ‘This decision was taken to please many supporters like Pataudi, but you cannot blame him for name the trophy after Sachin and Anderson. I hope that he will invite Sharmila Tagore (Mansoor’s wife) and his son Saif Ali Khan to give medals.

Jasprit Bumrah is the trump card
