The Indian Embassy has warned that some fraudsters are misusing the telephone lines of the embassy. These calls are often shown from the telephone number of the Indian Embassy (202-939-7000), but in reality these calls are fake. People who call the Indian citizens ask for personal information like credit card details or try to make money. They claim that people have mistakes in passports, visas, or immigration form which can be improved only by paying money. Otherwise you will have to face exile or jail.
What did the Indian Embassy say?
The Indian Embassy has clearly stated that the embassy or its officers never ask for personal information from any person via phone. If an additional document is required from an applicant, it is sought only through the official email coming from @mea.gov.in domain. The embassy has urged all Indian citizens not to respond to any such suspicious calls and do not give any personal information or transfer money.
Spoofing: New way of fraud
Fraudsters are using spuofing technology, in which it seems that the call is coming from the real number of the embassy, ​​while the call is actually being made from elsewhere. Using this technique, cheating people try to cheat the person making calls. The embassy said that if you want to share information about fake calls, you can email it with ‘Information on Spoken Calls’ subject and send it to cpers.washington@mea.gov.in.
