Indian Note Auction: The Indian Rs 100 note was in the headlines in a unique auction held recently in London. This note is becoming increasingly viral on social media, in which it is being claimed that the note was sold for a huge price of Rs 56,49,650. According to the claim, this was not an ordinary note but a ‘Haj note’ issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the 1950s. Its serial number was HA 078400. This note was issued especially for pilgrims traveling to Gulf countries for Haj pilgrimage. It is said that it was introduced with the aim of stopping illegal purchasing of gold.
Haj note was identified by the unique prefix ‘HA’, which made it different from other notes. These notes were different in color from the standard notes of Indian currency. The special thing was that these notes were not valid in India, but could be used in Gulf countries like United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. These notes went out of circulation in the 1970s after Kuwait issued its own currency in 1961 and other Gulf countries also did so.
What is the specialty of this note?
Today, these Hajj notes are considered rare and are in high demand among currency collectors. It is said that their value depends on their condition and rarity. Due to this historical importance, these notes are considered very important not only from the financial point of view but also from the cultural and historical point of view.
Rare Rs 10 note sold for Rs 6.90 lakh
Two rare notes of Rs 10 were also sold in this auction, one of which was priced at Rs 6.90 lakh and the other at Rs 5.80 lakh. These notes were issued on May 25, 1918 and relate to the last years of the First World War. Their historical significance includes their connection with the British ship SS Shirala. These notes belonging to the wreck of this ship, which was sunk in a torpedo attack by a German U-boat on July 2, 1918, attracted the attention of those interested in history at the auction.
