Iran Russia Relations: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (23 June 2025). Russia has been condemning America since Iran’s atomic bases were attacked. During the meeting in Kremlin, Putin assured the Iranian delegation that people from Iran could rely on Russia for support.
Khamenei wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin
According to a report by Reuters, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has asked his Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to give a letter to Putin, demanding to openly support. Iran does not like the way Russia is still supporting. The letter written by Khamenei states that Putin should come forward and support against Israel and American more. However, what kind of help Tehran wants, it is not clear yet.
Russia has not shown interest in direct confrontation yet
Russia is an old ally of Iran. He plays an important role in Iran’s nuclear dialogue with West countries with the help of veto in the United Nations Security Council. Putin’s army is currently fighting a major war in Ukraine for the fourth consecutive year. Russia has not yet shown interest in a direct confrontation with the US on the Iran’s issue. While Donald Trump has been trying to improve the relations between America and Russia ever since he became President.
Putin met Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi
Putin has repeatedly offered mediation between the US and Iran. According to the report, it has been demanded inside Russia that Russia should support Iran in the same way that America has supported Ukraine. After meeting Iran’s Foreign Minister, Putin said, “There is no basis and no justification for this aggressive action against Iran. We have friendly and reliable relations with Iran for a long time and we are trying to support Iranian people on our behalf.”
There was also a strategic partnership agreement between Russian President Putin and Iranian President Masood Peseshkian earlier this year, which was asked to increase security cooperation.
