Israel and Syria had a ceasefire agreement in 1974

Israel and Syria signed a ceasefire agreement in 1974. According to which the area located in the Golan Heights was decided to have a visible buffer zone. But shortly after the Al-Asad regime fell after the rule that lasted more than 50 years, the Israeli army started going inside the buffer zone and entered the Syrian area.

Syrian interim government is supporting the agreement

In fact, this entry from Israel in this buffer zone came when Syrian’s new interim President and rebel leader Ahmed al-Shara made it clear that his new administration would recognize the 1974 Shanti stop agreement with Israel. The interim President said on December 14, 2024, “Syrian struggle and Syrian war after the war do not allow any new confrontation.” He further said, “In this phase, priority is reconstruction and stability, not entangling in controversies that can lead to destruction later.”

Israel rejected the agreement with Syria

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the 1974 agreement was signed with a disorganized regime and hence it is invalid. Netanyahu said, “We will not let any hostile power be established on our border.”
