On this occasion, the Vice President of the country Jagdeep Dhankhar, while referring to the emergency during a program, said that the implementation of emergency was nothing short of earthquake to destroy democracy.
Addressing the program during the Golden Jubilee celebrations held at Kumaon University Nainital, he said that 50 years ago, on the same day, the oldest and now the most vibrant democracy in the world went through a serious crisis. This crisis was unpredictable such as an earthquake that destroyed democracy, it was to impose emergency. She was dark night, the cabinet was shocked.

Dhankhar said about the Emergency that the Prime Minister of that time, who was facing an adverse decision of the High Court, decided for personal interest, ignoring the entire nation. The then President also crushed the constitutional values ​​and signed the declaration of emergency. After this, the period of 21–22 months came, it was extremely turbulent and unimaginable for democracy. This was the dark period of our democracy.
Referring to the Emergency, the Vice President said that during that time one lakh forty thousand people were put in jails. They did not get any access to the justice system. They could not protect their fundamental rights. Nine High Courts showed courage and said that or not, fundamental rights cannot be postponed. Every citizen has the right to get his rights through judicial intervention.
‘The country’s highest court got foggy during the Emergency’
The Vice President said that during the Emergency in the country, the country’s highest court was foggy and overturned the decisions of 9 High Court. He decided two things that the declaration of emergency is the decision of the executive, it is not under judicial review. It also said that the executive will also decide the period of emergency. Also, citizens will not have any fundamental rights during the Emergency. This was a big setback for the public.
Referring to the ‘Constitution Husbandry Day’, the Vice President said that the youth should contemplate it because they will not understand until they know about it. What happened with the press? Who was put in jail? He will later become the Prime Minister and President of this country. This is the reason that it is necessary to make the youth aware. Today, today’s government decided that this day will be celebrated as ‘Constitution of Killing Day’.
