India’s 14th Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday (21 July 2025) citing health reasons. His resignation has come at a time when his tenure is still two years left. Dhankar, who took over in August 2022, sent his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu on Monday (21 July 2025), in which he mentioned Article 67 (A). Let’s know what is Article 67 (A)?
Jagdeep Dhankhar in his resignation cited Article 67 (A) of the Indian Constitution, which provides for the resignation of the Vice President. According to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution, while addressing the Vice President, the President, he can resign from his post with the help of a letter written by his hand. This resignation will be considered immediately. The President has to resign from the Vice President. The Vice President can resign from his post anytime before his five -year tenure, just he will have to submit a written resignation to the President. This process comes under Article 67 of the Constitution, which decides the outline of the Vice President’s tenure.
Constitutional process for election of new Vice President of India
Experts say that with the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the constitutional process for the election of the new Vice President of India will start. The Vice President is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, so this post cannot remain vacant for a long time. According to political observers, there is a strong possibility that the successor of Dhankhar will be held soon, as it has been mandatory by the Constitution to ensure continuity in the functioning of the upper house of Parliament. In the last one year, Dhankar had to be hospitalized several times due to health problems. Recently he had to be admitted to Nainital. The exact nature of his illness has not been revealed.
