Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post under Article 67 (a) of the Constitution, citing health reasons. With this decision, he has become the third Vice President of the country to leave the post without completing his tenure. This has happened only twice in the history so far. First, during the tenure of Vice President Krishnakant in 1997. He was sworn in as Vice President on August 21, 1997 and died on 27 July 2002 during his tenure.
Second time, in 1974, Vice President B.D. Jatti had resigned before the term ended, but he came in the role of interim president. Earlier, Varahagiri Venkat Giri also resigned from the post of Vice President for the Presidential election of India. Giri’s decision was in discussions at that time. Jagdeep Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022 and resigned in the post after nearly three years.
