India’s 14th Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned from his post on Monday (July 21, 2025) and surprised everyone. Despite the rest of the two -year term, he has given the reason for his resignation health reasons. However, the opposition has feared that there is some other reason behind his decision.
In his resignation, 74 -year -old Dhankar, thanked President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wrote, “It was an honor for me that I contributed to this transformative phase of unprecedented progress and economic development of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support and support has been invaluable. I have learned a lot from him during my tenure.”
Jagdeep Dhankhar was born in a farmer family
Jagdeep Dhankhar was born in a farmer family in Kithana village of Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. He educated the Sainik School in Chittorgarh and the University of Rajasthan. He was a lawyer in the Rajasthan High Court and later in the Supreme Court. It was from here that his political journey started.
Political journey: Congress to BJP
Dhankhar started politics with Congress and PV was an MP in Narasimha Rao government. Later, at the time of Ashok Gehlot’s rise in Rajasthan, he left the Congress and joined the BJP. He was also a Union Minister in the Chandrasekhar government. He was always active on the issue of providing OBC reservation to the OBC community, especially the Jat community of Rajasthan.
Strict attitude as Governor of Bengal
In 2019, he was appointed the Governor of West Bengal. During his tenure, he made several sharp comments on the Mamata Banerjee government about law and order, universities appointments and federal structure. Due to this, he remained in constant political discussions.
Conflict with opposition as Vice President
In 2022, he was elected Vice President by 528 votes. This was considered the biggest victory for a Vice President after 1992, but his sharp attitude with the opposition in the Rajya Sabha was in the news many times. The opposition had also tried to remove him from the post, which Dhankhar had taunted and said, “It is as if bypass surgery is done with a rusty vegetable cutting knife.”
