On the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, on Monday (July 21, 2025), Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned from his post. He wrote a letter to President Draupadi Murmu and said that he is resigning with immediate effect, taking care of his health and following the advice of doctors. His term was till August 2027, but leaving the post two years ago is giving rise to many political questions.

Sidds 11 days ago- ‘I will retire in 2027’

Dhankhar’s resignation surprised everyone because at an event on July 10, he himself said that he would complete his term and retire in 2027, but his stand changed in just 11 days and he resigned. Earlier in March, he was once admitted to AIIMS on a complaint of chest pain and his health deteriorated again during a program in Uttarakhand in June.

Dhankar was nominated by the NDA government in the year 2022. In the election held on 6 August 2022, he defeated the opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a big margin. He received 528 votes, while Alva was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of the country on 182. 10 August 2022.

The remaining tenure was two years

Dhankhar’s term was till 2027, that is, there was still more than two years left. In such a situation, sudden resignation gave rise to speculation. He thanked the President, Prime Minister and Cabinet citing health reasons in his letter.

Stir in political corridors

After his resignation, the stir in the political corridors has intensified. Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain said that it is shocking as he was active in Parliament till yesterday evening. At the same time, Congress spokesperson Pawan Kheda also questioned that the PMO or BJP leaders neither greeted him nor thank him. This silence indicates a big political developments.

Third person to resign from the post of Vice President

Dhankhar is the third Vice President of India who did not complete his term. Earlier in 1969, VV Giri resigned to contest the presidential election. At the same time, Krishnakant died during his tenure in 2002.

Played the responsibility till the last day

Dhankar, a few hours before the resignation, conducted the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha and also appealed to reduce the political conflict in the House. After his resignation, the question arises whether his health is the real reason or something else is going on behind the curtain?
