‘Some say 11 crore Muslims in the country, some say 12 crore, 14 crore, 22 crore. First, how many Brahmins are there, how many lower castes, how many are Sikhs, how many are Christians, how many others are there, there is only a little evil in it. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah has given this statement amid the announcement of ethnic census.
For the first time in the country, caste census is going to take place after independence, that is, now in the register of census, there will be a com of caste along with religion and thus data of all religions will be obtained with castes. After 2011, the census is going to take place. Meanwhile, we know how many Hindus and Muslims are in Jammu and Kashmir.
How much was the Hindu-Muslim population in Jammu and Kashmir before independence?
The total population of Jammu and Kashmir is 1.25 crore, out of which 68.31 percent are Muslims and 28.44 percent are Hindus. Before independence, the Muslim population here was 72.41 percent of the total population, while the Hindus were 25.01 percent. This figure is of the 1941 census. After this, there was a gradual decline in the Muslim population. However, Muslims were more than Hindus.
First census figures after independence
In the census that took place in 1951, the Muslim population came down to 68.31 percent i.e. Jammu and Kashmir with a population of 35.60 lakh had 24.32 lakh Muslims and 10.13 lakh Hindus. Hindu was only 28.45 percent of the total population. Exactly 50 years later, in 2011, the population of both communities has changed, but the stake is the same in 1951. In 2011 too, there were 68.31 percent Muslim and 28.43 percent Hindus. At that time, the total population of the union territory was 1.25 crore, out of which 85.67 lakh Muslims and 35.66 lakh Hindu population were recorded.

There were earlier 14 districts in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2006, eight new districts were created here, after which their number increased to 22. Out of 22, 17 of the 22 are Muslim mazori, out of which 10 are in Kashmir, 6 in Jammu Division and one in Ladakh.
