Justice joymalya bagchi: Justice Joyamalya Bagchi has taken over as a judge of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna administered him the oath of office. On March 10, the President accepted the recommendation of his appointment. Due to the holiday of Holi in the Supreme Court, his swearing -in program was held on Monday (March 17). According to the seniority sequence of court judges, Justice Bagchi can become the Chief Justice of the country in future.
Justice Bagchi was number 11 in the order of the country’s High Court judges. The proposal passed by the 5 -member collegium headed by Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna recommended his appointment on certain grounds. It was said in the proposal that the collegium has selected Justice Bagchi in addition to his qualifications, keeping in mind that after Justice Altamash Kabir, no judge of the Calcutta High Court has become Chief Justice. Justice Kabir retired in 2013.

Justice Bagchi’s term will be around 6 years in the Supreme Court. After the retirement of Justice KV Vishwanathan, he will become the Chief Justice of the country on 26 May 2031. He will retire on 2 October 2031 after holding this post a few days from 4 months. At present, 32 judges are working in the Supreme Court while the total sanctioned posts are 34. After taking charge of Justice Bagchi, the number of judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 33.
Justice Bagchi’s 13 -year judicial journey
Justice Bagchi’s judicial career began on 27 June 2011 when he was appointed a judge in the Calcutta High Court. Later, on January 4, 2021, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court, but on November 8, 2021, he returned to the Calcutta High Court again and has been working there since then. In his judicial experience of more than 13 years, he contributed significantly in different fields of law and earned widespread knowledge.
