Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna administered the oath to JoyMalya Bagchi of Calcutta High Court on Monday (March 17, 2025) as a Supreme Court Judge.
Justice Bagchi’s tenure in the Supreme Court will be more than six years and during this time he will also take charge as the Chief Justice. Justice Bagchi will hold the post of Chief Justice of India till his retirement on 2 October 2031 after Justice Bagchi Justice KV Vishwanathan retires on 25 May 2031. Justice Bagchi’s date of birth is 3 October 1966.
The Central Government approved the name of Justice Bagchi on 10 March for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court. Earlier, his name was recommended by a five -member collegium led by Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna on March 6.
This collegium also included Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai, Justice Suryakant, Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Vikram Nath. The collegium had said that since the retirement of Justice Altams Kabir on 18 July 2013, no judge of the Calcutta High Court has become the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Bagchi was appointed a judge of the Calcutta High Court on 27 June 2011. He was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021. Justice Bagchi was sent back to the Calcutta High Court on 8 November 2021 and since then he was working there.
He has worked as a judge of the High Court for more than 13 years. Justice Joymalya Bagchi is ranked 11th in the Joint All India Seniority of the High Court judges, including the Chief Justice.
