Justice Verma caught in cash case reached Supreme Court, Law Minister Meghwal said- ‘Decision of MPs’

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Friday (July 18, 2025) that it is completely a matter of MPs to bring impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma of Allahabad High Court in Parliament and the government is not included anywhere.

Meghwal, in an interview to ‘PTI’, Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that the internal committee constituted on behalf of the then Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna of India has submitted its report to investigate the allegations against Justice Verma.

Parliament has the right to remove judge

The Law Minister said that if Justice Verma does not agree with the report and knocks on the door of the Supreme Court or any High Court, then it is his privilege. He said that Parliament has the right to remove the Supreme Court or High Court judge.

Meghwal said that support of at least 100 members in the Lok Sabha and 50 in Rajya Sabha is necessary to pass impeachment motion against a judge. This is completely the subject of MPs, they have made some efforts and the government is not in the picture anywhere in it.

Justice Verma knocked on the door of Supreme Court

Meanwhile, Justice Verma moved to the Supreme Court on Friday to request the report of the Internal Investigation Committee to be invalid. The committee has found him guilty of misconduct in the case of recovery of cash at his residence. Verma has requested the current Chief Justice Khanna to cancel the recommendation made on May 8 to remove him from the post.

However, the government is emphasizing a proposal in the monsoon session of Parliament starting on July 21 to remove Justice Verma. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said that his party MPs will also sign this proposal.

Four to five half -baked sacks filled with notes received from storeroom

Chief Justice of Delhi High Court D.K. Upadhyay’s 25 -page investigation report, which has been uploaded on the Supreme Court website, has two brief notes in Hindi, which states that on March 14, after extinguishing the fire in the storeroom of Justice Verma’s Lutyens Delhi residence in Lutyens Delhi, four to five additional sacks filled with notes were found.

The report said that on the first time, it seemed that the fire was caused by a short-circuit. At that time, Justice Verma, a judge of the Delhi High Court, strongly condemned the allegations in his reply and said that no cash was kept in the store room on behalf of him or any member of his family.
