In the Supreme Court, Chief Justice BR Gawai on Monday reprimanded a lawyer for addressing Justice Yashwant Verma of Allahabad High Court with his surname. In fact, advocate Mathews Nedumpra was addressing Justice Verma as ‘Verma’ in the Supreme Court.
To this, CJI said, ‘Are they your friends? He is still Justice Verma. How do you address them? Keep some dignity. You are talking about a learned judge. He is still a judge of this court. The lawyer replied, ‘I don’t think they should give so much respect.
To this, CJI said, “Please do not give order to the court.” At the same time, the court also dismissed the petition of lawyer Mathews Nedumpra in the cash seizure case, demanding to register an FIR against Justice Verma.
Actually, Justice Verma’s house in Lutyens Delhi was on fire on the night of 14 March. Sacks filled with bundles of 500-500 rupees were found from the store room of his house. Justice Verma was a Justice of the Delhi High Court at that time. He was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court.
