Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee on Monday resigned as the party’s chief whip (Chief Whip) in the Lok Sabha amidst controversy with his colleague Mahua Moitra and quarrel with Kirti Azad. He announced his resignation after attending a virtual meeting of TMC MPs chaired by the party chief.
At the same time, sources say that Kalyan Banerjee can reconsider his decision shortly after resigning from the post of TMC’s Chief Whip. He has already contacted the top leaders of TMC. Talking to the media after resigning, Banerjee said, ‘I have left the post of Chief Whip of the party in the Lok Sabha, as’ Didi’ (West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee) said during the virtual meeting that there is a lack of coordination among the party MPs. So the blame is on me. So I have decided to leave the post. The meeting was held in the presence of TMC Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs.
Banerjee objected to indecent language
Kalyan Banerjee has repeatedly disputed his party MP Mahua Moitra. Recently, Banerjee criticized Moitra in a post on social media platform X, in which he objected to the indefinite language used by Moitra in a podcast.
Banerjee wrote, ‘I have noticed the personal comments made by Mahua Moitra recently in a public podcast. His words, which involves comparing an MP with inhuman words such as’ pig ‘, is not only unfortunate, but it shows a deep disregard of the basic rules of decent dialogue.’
‘They should pay attention’
He further said, ‘Those who use abusive words instead of answers, they should look into what kind of politics they are doing. When a public representative descends on abuses and rude satire, it shows not strength, but insecurity. ‘
He said that I should say this clearly, what I said were questions of public accountability and personal conduct, which every public person should be ready to face- whether it is male or female. If these facts are inconvenient or uncomfortable, then it is not appropriate to declare legitimate criticism as “women-malice” to avoid investigation.
Banerjee accused Moitra of calling the male colleague ‘sexually frustrated’ and called it derogatory.
‘Unacceptable language is unacceptable language’
He said, ‘If such a language was used against a woman, there would have been a nationwide outrage, but when the man is targeted, it is ignored. Abuse is abusive, irrespective of any gender. Such comments are not only indecent, but is unacceptable for anyone.
The TMC leader said that if Moitra thinks that dirty abuses will hide their failures or they will be focused on their records, then she is cheating herself. Those who rely on abuses instead of answering, they are not the guards of democracy- they are embarrassed by it and the people of this country can understand their actions.
Let me tell you that Kalyan Banerjee had a public dispute with former cricketer and party MP Kirti Azad, who had already put the Trinamool Congress in an uncomfortable position. These incidents highlight internal differences within the party, especially when the 2026 assembly elections are near in West Bengal.
There has been a dispute over Banerjee’s behavior earlier, in which he made unfair remarks against Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and a parliamentary committee meeting included a case of breaking glass bottle.
