Ranya Rao Gold Smugggling Case: DGP Ramchandra Rao, father of actress Ranya Rao, arrested in the gold smuggling case, has come under the investigation. After investigation launched by the Government of Karnataka, he has been sent on mandatory leave. Ranya Rao claimed a letter addressed to Additional Director General of DRI in Bengaluru on 6 March 2025 that a false case has been imposed on him.
Ranya Rao was arrested at Bangalore Airport with a 14.2 kg gold worth Rs 12.56 crore while returning from Dubai on March 3. Ranya Rao wrote a letter to the Additional Director General of DRI in Bengaluru claiming that a false case has been imposed on him. He alleged that the Revenue Intelligence Directorate (DRI) officials assaulted him and forced him to signed some papers already written.
The actress claimed that she was slapped 10 to 15 times until she was detained to the court. He alleged, “Despite repeated assault and slapping, I refused to sign the statement prepared by him (DRI officials).” Ranya Rao claimed, “One of the officials told me that if she does not sign, she will reveal my father’s name and identity, even if we know that she is not involved in it.”
Ranya Rao is currently in jail and will have to stay in jail at the moment as a special court in Bengaluru turned down the bail plea on Friday. The DRI had earlier told the court that the matter of gold smuggling related to Ranya Rao is of international level and there is also a connection of hawala. Because of this, it has become a matter related to national security. He said that it is necessary to investigate the role of this gang of smuggling.
On 10 March 2025, the Karnataka government appointed Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta to investigate his role in the alleged gold smuggling activity of Ramchandra Rao’s step -daughter. The state government also ordered a CID investigation of the negligence done by the police officers at the airport.
