kolkata news: A special Poxo court in Kolkata sentenced him to death on Tuesday (February 18, 2025) for rape and attempt to murder a 7 -month -old girl. The accused was convicted on Monday by the Poxo Court in Bankshal, after which the sentence was announced on Tuesday. The court completed the hearing of this case in just 75 days.
The convict hanged in the rarest of rare case
After hearing the final arguments of the prosecution and the defense, the court called it a “rarest of rare” case. Judge Indraila Mukherjee found the convict Rajiv Ghosh under Section 65 (2), 140 (4), 137 (2), 118 and Section 6 of the Poxo Act. Under these sections, he was hanged as a maximum punishment and ordered a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s family.
Arrest from Jhargram, hearing completed in 40 days
Rajiv Ghosh committed this crime on 30 November, after which he was arrested from his house in Gopiballavpur in Jhargram district on the morning of 5 December. The police filed the first charge sheet in the case on 30 December, after which a supplementary charge sheet was also presented a few days later. The hearing started from 7 January was completed in just 40 days.
The victim’s family expressed satisfaction over the decision
The victim’s treatment of R.G. of Kolkata Tax is running in medical college and hospital. Government prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee said that the condition of the girl remains critical. However, the victim’s family has expressed satisfaction over this decision.
Sixth hanging sentence under Poxo Act in Bengal
This was the seventh death sentence during the last six months by the West Bengal courts. This is the sixth hanging sentence given for sexual harassment of minors under the Poxo Act.
Lady doctor murder case also remained in the headlines
