There is no new border and language dispute in Maharashtra-Karnataka …
- There is a dispute between the two states over the boundary of Belgavi, Khanapur, Nipani, Nandgad and Karwar (North Kannada district).
- During the reorganization of linguistic base states in 1956, some leaders of Maharashtra demanded to make Marathi -speaking Belgavi City, Khanapur, Nipani, Nandgad and Karwar a part of Maharashtra.
- A dispute started in Karnataka regarding this. Karnataka was then Mysore. The then CM S. of Mysore Nizalingpa, the then PM Indira Gandhi and the then CM VP Naik of Maharashtra agreed to this.
- The Mahajan Commission had said in its report that it could not recommend to merge Belgaum in Maharashtra, but the Commission had handed over Belagundi village to Maharashtra, five kilometers from Belgavi to Maharashtra.
- According to a BBC report, Karnataka was ready, as he was getting bent with 247 villages, but he also had discontinuity due to losing Nipani and Khanapur.
- The dispute deepened so much that the problem could not be solved even in the meeting of the Chief Ministers of both the states. Both states remain on the policy of leaving their place and taking it and due to this the issue keeps arising again and again.
- In 2004, the Maharashtra government demanded 814 villages from Karnataka in the Supreme Court. The case is still pending in the Supreme Court, as the Karnataka case has been avoiding the cross-examination by staying non-hurried.
