The Maharashtra government has made Marathi mandatory for all kinds of dialogues in the Government and Semi-Government Office. According to the order, the use of Marathi will also be necessary in all urban bodies, government corporations and aided institutions. This rule has also been applied to the instruction board and documentation throughout the state.

The State Planning Department has issued a notification on Monday. In which it is said that if an officer violates this rule, action will be taken against him.

The government’s Marathi language policy was approved last year. The purpose of this policy is to conserve, propagate and develop language, so that the use of Marathi can be increased in government functioning.

Rules involved in order

  • People coming to government offices will also have to communicate in Marathi itself. Only those who are foreigners, have come from outside Maharashtra or Marathi speaking.
  • Boards named in offices and public sector enterprises, notices and signage to be pasted inside should also be held in Marathi.
  • The order also said that new businesses should register their names in Marathi without English translation.

Marathi got classical language status in 2024

According to the Maharashtra Official Language Act 1964, all the official documents including proposals, letters and circulars in the state should be held in Marathi. The Marathi language policy approved in 2024 recommended the use of Marathi in all public affairs for the protection, promotion, spread and development of language.

In October last year, the central government gave Marathi a classical language status, meeting Marathi, meeting for a long time. The Center had said that with the status of classical language, especially employment opportunities will increase in education and research fields.

The order states that action will be taken on those government employees who do not follow the language rules. Complaints of those who violate the rules can be complained to the office of the office or the heads of the department. They will investigate and take action if necessary.
