Mahatma Gandhi arrived at the Haridwar Kumbh in 1915. Here he met the saint community.
During the British Raj, Kumbh Mela was an effective medium for the meeting of freedom fighters and making people aware. On the lines of the symbols of the pilgrim priests (Prayagwal) in the Prayag Kumbh Mela, the revolutionaries also used symbols to convey their message. Through this, an intelligence message was given to the comrades to gather at one place.
Although there is no written document about them. The documents of Prayag Teerth priests show that Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi had come to Sangam city before making the outline of the revolution of 1857. She stayed at a pilgrimage priest’s house.
It was not without reason that while fighting the British, Rani Lakshmibai reached the Badi Shala of Naga Sadhu Baba Gangadas in Gwalior. Then 2 thousand Naga Sadhus fought a fierce battle with the British and 745 Sadhus were martyred.
Rani Lakshmibai had come to Sangam city to prepare for the revolution of 1857.
Bombs were thrown at people who took part in the rebellion In June 1857, when the struggle for the first revolution was at its peak, a large number of Prayagwals also joined the rebellion. After this, Colonel Neel, who reached Allahabad, on June 15, 1857, rained bombs in the areas near Sangam, where there was a settlement of Prayagwals and the area of Magh Mela.
During the Haridwar Kumbh in 1915, the British started building dams on the Ganga. When the movement increased, the decision had to be withdrawn.
Bapu took a dip in Sangam in 1918
- On the advice of his political guru Gopalkrishna Gokhale, Mahatma Gandhi reached Prayag Kumbh in 1918 and took a bath. British officers wrote in the intelligence report – Gandhi kept meeting people continuously. Bapu also mentioned this journey in the Faizabad public meeting on 10 February 1921.
- The situation was such that to prevent crowding in the Kumbh of 1918, Railway Board Chairman RW Gillen had also banned the sale of railway tickets. Troubled by the movements and revolutionaries, the British government organized the Kumbh in Prayagraj in 1930 out of fear.
- In fact, the British had become more alert due to rumors of Gandhi starting the Salt Movement. After this, the next Kumbh took place in Prayag in 1942. At the height of the Quit India Movement, the British did not officially announce the Kumbh of 1942. Sale of rail and bus tickets was stopped.
- News was spread that due to the World War, Japan might drop bombs on the fair. Despite this, lakhs of pilgrims had arrived.
The British were afraid that due to Mahatma Gandhi’s arrival at Kumbh, a crowd would gather there. Therefore the British government banned the sale of railway tickets.
Viceroy asked – how much does it cost to invite so many people, answer – 2 paise At the behest of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya, the then Viceroy Lord Linlithgow came to Prayag Kumbh in 1942. Seeing the huge crowd, he asked – ‘It must have cost a lot to invite so many people?’ Mahamana said, ‘Only two paisa were spent.’ Linlithgow said, ‘Pandij ji, aren’t you kidding?’ On this Mahamana took out the almanac from his pocket and said, ‘It is worth two paise. From this we come to know about Kumbh and Snan festivals. People come without any invitation.
Forgotten camps since 1946 In the Magh Mela of 1946, 18 year old Rajaram Tiwari started the work by forming ‘Bharat Seva Dal’ organization to help the lost people reach their families. He died in 2016 and he continued doing this work every year. After his death, his family members are running this institution.
