Bangladesh English Textbooks Changes: Many changes are being seen in Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina left the country. Meanwhile, news is coming that major changes are going to be made in the Bengali and English textbooks for primary and middle educational institutions under the Yunus government, which will also include removal of some content related to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Sources in the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCBT) said that the content of the student-led public revolt can be included in the Bengali and English textbooks of classes five to nine. Six texts and prose on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be removed from the English textbook of classes six to nine, while four articles on the July Movement will be added.
All content will be removed on Teatoomir
Three prose and poems on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman can be removed from Bengali textbooks of classes 6 and 7 and four articles on July textbook can be added in their place. All content on Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and Titumir will be removed from Class 6 Bengali textbook. It has also been decided that five contents of Celina Hussain, two contents of Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, one content each of Syed Shamsul Haq, Rokonuzzaman Khan, Nirmalendu Goon and former bureaucrat Kamal Chaudhary will be removed.
Argument of interim government
NCTB (National Curriculum and Textbook Board) Chairman Professor AKM Riazul Hasan said, “Exaggerative content about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is being removed from the textbooks. One leader, one country – it is not like that. There were other leaders too, like Sher-e-Bangla AKA Fazlul Haq, Maulana Bhashani, and Ziaur Rehman, and there is no chance of underestimating their contributions.”
He said that some of the content about Bangabandhu being removed, such as the public revolt of 1969, the elections of 1970 and the March 7 speech in 1971, is still present in many textbooks. Regarding the removal of content on Maulana Bhashani, he said, “It may have been removed from one textbook, but it was included in another.” “Another article on him has been added in a separate textbook,” he said about the removal of material on Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain from the Class 7 textbook.
