Brooklyn Bridge Accident: A serious incident occurred in New York City on Saturday night (May 17) when the Mexican Navy’s long sailing ship ‘Arm Kuuthemok’ collided with the Brooklyn Bridge. This collision stirred the entire area. About 200 people were riding on the ship. After the collision, a search and rescue operation has been started to get people out of the water.
The incident is reported to be just before 9 pm when the 147-foot elevated mast of the ship hit the deck of the bridge. Soon after, videos and footage of the incident went viral on social media, in which the nervousness and fear of the people were clearly visible.

Navy personnel and passengers were present on the ship
After the incident, several injured were sent to Brooklyn Navy Yard and then to the hospital. The condition of two people is said to be critical. According to the New York Post and other media reports, the ship was a training vessel of the Mexican Navy, built in Spain in 1982. The name of this vessel is ‘Kuuthemok’, which is the name of a famous warrior king in Mexican history. However, it is not clear why the ship was traveling in the East River and under which mission.
Video of collision viral on social media
Many shocking videos and reactions have come out on social media. One user wrote, ‘I saw Brooklyn Bridge blowing live smoke by a huge Mexican flag boat.’ Another called it to destroy the bridge by a pirate ship. The incident brought back memories of the Baltimore Bridge accident, where the bridge of Francis Scott collapsed and killed 6 people due to the collision of a cargo ship in March 2024.
Navy preparation and safety measures in the circle of questions
This incident has once again questioned the plans for maritime security, navigation system and river traffic of naval ships. Officials have not yet told what was the reason for the collision – was it a human error, a default in technical fault or navigation? Although it is a matter of relief that there is no heavy loss of life and property, but such a threat to the historical structure like Brooklyn Bridge is worrying. The New York administration has ordered an inquiry into the bridge situation and security arrangements are also being reviewed.
