Mizoram African Swine Flu: The outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in Mizoram caused huge financial losses to the state in 2024. According to officials of the state animal husbandry and veterinary department, the total loss this year has been Rs 336.49 crore. So far, from 2021 to 2024, the state has suffered a total loss of Rs 896.69 crore due to African swine fever. During this period, incidents of death and killing of pigs have created a serious crisis in the state.
According to 2024 data, 14,950 pigs died and 24,177 pigs were slaughtered due to African swine fever. These numbers reflect the incidents of large-scale deaths and murders in rural areas of Mizoram. State officials say such outbreaks have shaken Mizoram’s pig farming industry. This situation started in 2021 when the outbreak of this fever was first seen in Lungsen village of Lunglei district.
Situation from 2021 till now
The first outbreak of African swine fever in Mizoram occurred in March 2021. A total of 33,417 pigs died at that time and 12,568 pigs were culled to prevent the spread of the disease. In the next year i.e. 2022, 12,795 pigs died and 11,686 pigs were slaughtered. However, in 2023 this figure reduced to 1,139 deaths and killing of 980 pigs. From this it appears that the outbreak of fever has slowed down, although it has not completely ended yet.
Reduction in cases of swine diseases in Mizoram
Officials say that the outbreak of African swine fever is now showing signs of decline. According to the information, there has been a decline in the incidents of death and killing of pigs since mid-December. Usually the outbreak of this fever subsides in winter and increases again in the summer season. Despite this, the state of Mizoram has faced several swine diseases in the past, such as Porcine Productive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), which has killed thousands of pigs in the past.
