Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told Parliament on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) that the Gujarat section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project between Vapi and Sabarmati is expected to be completed by December 2027 and the entire 508 km long project is expected to be completed by December 2029.
The Union Minister said that the bullet train project is very complex and technically intensive and the exact time of its completion can be detected only when all the construction work related to it like civil structure, track, electrical, signaling and telecommunications, trainSet supply will be completed.
Technical and Financial Assistance of Japan
MahsR is being constructed with technical and financial assistance of Japan. This project is passing through Gujarat, Maharashtra and Union Territory Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The Union Minister informed that this project plans to build 12 stations in Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
He informed that by June 30, 2025, a total of Rs 78,839 crore has been spent on this project. The total estimated cost of the MAHSR project is around Rs 1,08,000 crore, out of which 81 percent i.e. Rs 88,000 crore is being funded by Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), while the remaining 19 percent i.e. Rs 19 percent i.e. 20,000 crore rupees will be funded by the Ministry of Railway (50 percent) and Maharashtra and Gujarat State Governments (every 25 percent).
Project affected due to delay in land acquisition
The Union Minister said that the project was affected till 2021 due to delay in land acquisition in Maharashtra. However, currently the entire land (1389.5 hectares) has been acquired for the MAHSR project. The final location survey and land technical investigation have also been completed and alignment has also been finalized. At the same time, wildlife, coastal regulation area (CRZ) and all the forest related statutory approvals have been obtained and all the civil contracts of the project have been provided.
Preparations started for bullet train project
Explaining in detail about the bullet train project, the Union Minister said that the work of 392 km of pear construction, 329 km girder casting and 308 km girder launching has been completed. The work of the tunnel (about 21 km) below the sea has also started.
He said that to expand the high-speed rail (HSR) network in India ahead of the MAHSR Corridor, a detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), to meet the growing passenger demand between major cities of commercial and tourism.
