According to Srikotirudra Samhita of Shivpuran, there was a demon named Daruk in ancient times. His wife’s name was Daruka. Both used to live in the beautiful forest given by Durgaji. The forest was situated on the western sea. The residents there were very saddened by the nuisances of these two. They all went together to the sage Aurva and told them their grief. Aur Rishi said- you guys do not panic. When demons start obstructing the violence and sacrifice of creatures, then their death is fixed.
The sage started doing penance for his welfare. When the gods came to know that Aurva Rishi had cursed the demons, everyone came to the war. There was a fierce war in the Devas and Danavas. Daruk’s wife Daruka picked up this city with the influence of her earlier boon and established it in the sea. The demons started living there happily. One day Daruka came out of the sea and came to the earth. She saw that a boat was floating on the sea filled with innumerable humans. He called the demons and took everyone captive. There was also a Vaishya named Supriya among those prisoners. He started worshiping Shiva by staying in the prison. Other prisoners also started worshiping Shivji. Six months passed while worshiping those people.
One day a messenger of Daruk saw him worshiping Shiva. On this, Daruk came to Vaishya and asked- whom are you worshiping. For what reason is this worship doing this? If you tell the truth, then I will leave you. Otherwise you will be killed. Vaishya did not answer any. The demon was determined to kill the Vaishya. Seeing this crisis, Vaishya closed his eyes and started praising Shiva – O Swami! I am in your shelter Protect the refuge. Lord Shankar appeared there. He destroyed all the demons with his Pashupatastra. Due to this, he became devoid of forest demons. Lord Shankar said- Now people will be here to follow the Vedic religions of all four varnas. Unrighteousness has ended here.
After Daruk died, his wife went to Daruka Durgaji and started praying to protect her dynasty and protect the family. On this, Shiva and Parvatiji started living in that place as Jyotirlinga. Durgaji gave Daruka a bride with the grace of Shiva that at the end of this era, the demons will reside here and Daruka will rule over them.
