In the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the debate of global reforms has intensified. Foreign Minister of India Dr. S. Jayashankar, while addressing the UNGA in New York, emphasized reforms in the current situation of the United Nations. He said that both permanent and temporary membership of the Security Council should expand. And India is ready to fulfill big responsibilities.
At the same time, the Foreign Minister of Russia openly supported India and Brazil as a strong contender for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the Prime Minister of Bhutan has supported India and Japan.
He said, ‘Madame President, a fair report card will show that the United Nations is in a state of crisis. When peace is in danger from conflicts, derailment is derailed due to lack of development resources, human rights are being affected by terrorism, even then the United Nations is trapped in the gridlock. Due to the weakening of the ability to create a normal basis, trust in multilateralism is also decreasing.
‘Most member countries want change’
He claimed that most of the member countries want change, but the process is being made a hindrance to the result. He suggested that the improvement agenda should be seriously addressed by crossing this negativity. It is especially necessary to improve the historical injustice done to Africa, including expansion of both permanent and temporary memberships of the council.
‘India is ready’
The Foreign Minister insisted, ‘Both permanent and temporary membership of the Security Council should expand. An improvised council should be really representative. India is ready to fulfill big responsibilities.
He said that today the situation of the global South is particularly serious. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India believes that it has both the duties and obligations to contribute. In this series, India has started more than 600 major development projects in 78 countries, which are spread from large infrastructure to small livelihood programs, capacity building to public welfare.
Russia supported
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavarov, in his address, described India and Brazil as “strong contenders” for UNSC improvement and expansion. He said that both countries should get permanent membership of the Security Council.
Lavrov also criticized Western countries who are trying to re -implement United Nations sanctions on Iran. Describing it as “illegal”, he said that the Western nations are ignoring international regulations and trying to restore the restrictions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.
Bhutan told India and Japan worthy
Apart from this, Bhutan Prime Minister Tsering Tobege in his address at UNGA 80, described India and Japan as ‘entitled nation’ for permanent membership of UNSC.
He said, ‘Bhutan supports reform in the United Nations, which includes improvement in the Security Council and expansion of both permanent and temporary membership. The amended security council should include qualified countries like India and Japan as well as other competent and leading countries to reflect today’s complex realities.
Let us tell you that the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) consists of 15 members which are divided into permanent and temporary seats. Five countries- China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States are its permanent members. All these countries use veto power. While the remaining 10 seats are filled by temporary members, which are selected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for a two-year term. These seats are distributed at the regional level to ensure representation from different parts of the world.
