Neeraj Chopra Classic: India’s two -time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra will attend the Global Javalin throw event adorned with star players. This global javelin throw competition will be held on May 24 in Panchkula.
The competition has been named Neeraj Chopra Classic, as this Indian star was actively involved in its event. Sports operating organization Vishwa Athletics has given this competition the status of category A, which will be in Tau Devi Lal Stadium.
27 -year -old Neeraj Chopra, a resident of Khandra village near Panipat, Haryana, took training at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula from 2012 to 2015.
Neeraj Chopra has recently made veteran javelin throw player John Jeshani as his coach and is expected to start his session in Doha Diamond League competition on 16 May. This tournament to be held in Panchkula will be Neeraj’s second competition in this season.
The website of World Athletics, however, has not listed this event as its ‘Continental Tour’. The calendar, however, was imposed before the start of the season.
Earlier in January, the President of World Athletics, Sebastian, supported the event, saying that this would help India’s ability to host top level competitions.
Chopra is also included in the organizing committee of this competition. In collaboration with JSW Sports and Indian Athletics Federation (AFI), he has played an important role in bringing this competition to the country.
Chopra and JSW Sports want to make this competition an annual tournament in the World Athletics Calendar. AFI President Bahadur Singh Sagu said that this tournament will improve the country’s athletics image.
Sagu told PTI, ‘This tournament is taking place at the same place where Neeraj spent most of his junior camp. He would want to get this tournament done in his home state. It is a very good thing for Indian athletics to host this tournament in the country with Neeraj’s participation.
