Nitish Katara murder case: Supreme Court extended Vikas Yadav’s interim bail for two weeks

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) extended the interim bail period of convict Vikas Yadav, who was serving a 25 -year jail sentence in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, for two weeks to take care of his sick mother. Vikas Yadav was granted interim bail on 24 April, which was extended on 8 May.

On Tuesday, Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan and Justice Manmohan extended the relief period for two weeks, so that Yadav could take care of his mother, who underwent surgery in AIIMS in New Delhi. However, the Supreme Court clarified that Yadav’s interim bail will not be extended anymore. He postponed the hearing of the case for July.

Vikas Yadav’s lawyer said that since the surgery was done on May 25, his mother needs care after the operation and because of the siblings or no one else at home, Yadav will have to take care of him.

On May 8 last, the apex court considered the AIIMS Medical Board report, which said that Yadav’s mother’s condition is stable and she could be discharged.

The Supreme Court on April 24 granted Yadav interim bail to meet his ailing mother and directed that they should be examined by a medical board of AIIMS doctors.

The Supreme Court, while implementing the conditions, directed the convict not to contact the witnesses of the case, including Katara’s mother Neelam Katara, while implementing the conditions.

The Supreme Court gave him relief on the condition of getting a bond of Rs 1 lakh and depositing the same bail amount. Vikas is the son of DP Yadav, the politician of Uttar Pradesh. His cousin Vishal Yadav was also sentenced for the kidnapping and murder of Katara.

Both Vikas’s sister was against Bharti Yadav’s alleged love affair with Katara, because he was from different castes. Another convict Sukhdev wrestler was sentenced to 20 years in jail without any exemption.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had sentenced the development and Vishal Yadav to 30 years without any exemption, retaining the sentence of life imprisonment given by the lower court.

He sentenced the third convict wrestler to 25 years in jail. The Delhi Jail administration rejected the demand for his exemption after Yadav’s conduct was found unsatisfactory last year.
