India’s senior scientist Dr. Rajagopala Chidambaram died in the early hours of Saturday. He was 88 years old. Atomic Energy Department official said that Rajagopala breathed his last at 3.20 am at Mumbai Jaslok Hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the demise of Dr. Rajagopala. He said, “Dr. Rajagopala played an important role in strengthening India’s scientific and diplomatic power. He was one of the architects of India’s nuclear program. The coming generations will take inspiration from his work.”

Important role in Pokhran nuclear test, honored with Padma Vibhushan Dr. Rajagopala played an important role in the Pokhran nuclear tests conducted in 1974 and 1998. He also played an active role in nuclear weapons development in the country. Dr. Rajagopala was awarded the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999. He also took over the responsibility of Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. He was the Chairman of the Indian Nuclear Energy Commission and also the Chief Scientific Advisor of India.

Dr. Rajagopala was born in Chennai in 1936. He studied at Presidency College, Chennai and Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. The Department of Atomic Energy said, “Dr. Rajagopala played an important role in the country’s first nuclear test in 1974.
He led the atomic energy team during the Pokhran test in 1998. Thanks to his contribution, India established itself as a nuclear power in the world. He was given honorary doctorate degrees from many universities of the world.
His demise is an irreparable loss for the country and our scientific community. He was a pioneer of science and technology, his works gave the country self-confidence and nuclear power.”
