Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post citing health reasons. His sudden resignation has led to a round of speculation and assessment in opposition parties.
Senior Congress leader and chief whip Jairam Ramesh, with whom the Vice President was debated several times in the Rajya Sabha, said that he spoke to Dhankhar on telephone at 7:30 pm. Then Dhankhar was with his family and he said that he would talk to him tomorrow. Earlier at around 5 pm, Jairam Ramesh, Pramod Tiwari and Akhilesh Prasad Singh met Dhankhar. Jairam said that everything seemed normal because Dhankhar said that the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee will be held at 10 am on Tuesday.
Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh was not sure of this development and he said that he had met Dhankhar and left around 6 pm. His health was fine and he did not give any indication of resignation. In contrast, the Rajya Sabha chairman also told that he has to be included in a committee, about which he will give detailed information later.
A political storm was taking shape just behind the political activities that looked normal from above. On Monday, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar accepted the notice of opposition members of the impeachment motion against Justice Verma. This happened at the same time (2 pm) when it was reported that more than 100 MPs from the ruling and opposition parties in the lower house have signed a notice of impeachment motion against Justice Verma.
Around 4:07 pm, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar gave detailed information about receiving notice from 63 opposition MPs on impeachment motion.
He reminded of the process when notices are given in both houses on impeachment motion against a judge. Dhankhar gave details of the process and also asked Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to confirm whether notice has been given in the lower house. Then he spoke about further action as per the formation and rules of a joint committee.
