Opposition targets modi government in rajya sabha on poor condition of health sector

OPPOSITION TARGETS Modi GOVT: Opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha strongly criticized the government’s health policies on Tuesday (March 18, 2025) and claimed that India is also behind its neighboring countries on many health standards.

Sukhendu Shekhar Rai of Trinamool Congress accused the government of economic discrimination against West Bengal. He said that the central government is stopping the amount of many schemes including MNREGA, while the state has fulfilled all the conditions. He stated the need to stop fake medicines and promote organic farming. Rai said, “Poison in water, poison in the air, poison in food. It is not a nectar, poison.”

Government failed in TB and Dengue control
Akhilesh Prasad Singh of Congress said that the government has completely failed in 2025 targets of TB eradication. He said, “25% of the world’s TB patients are in India. There is no comprehensive plan for the prevention of diseases like dengue. Malnutrition in India is worse than Bangladesh. He questioned the quality of generic medicines and said that there is a huge shortage of teachers in AIIMS and medical colleges.

Aam Aadmi Party attack on Ayushman Yojana
AAP MP Sandeep Kumar Pathak called Ayushman Bharat Yojana a “wonder of the world”. He said that this scheme has been made in the interest of hospitals more than patients. Non-essential operations are being done, while necessary surgery is being deferred. The middle class is being completely ignored. Concern over health budget and condition of government hospitals
Gola Baburao of YSR Congress and Sulata Dev of BJD questioned inadequate allocation in the health budget. He said that there is a need to increase the facilities of state hospitals. There is heavy corruption under the Ayushman scheme, 3000 fake cards were made in Gujarat, which was priced at Rs 1500 per card. The budget allocated for health services cannot be fully utilized.

Demand for BJP’s response and verification
BJP MPs opposed the allegations of the opposition and asked Sulata Dev to certify their claims. On this, the Presiding Vice President S Niranjan Reddy instructed that if there is a document, it should be presented in the House. The opposition accused the government of negligence, forgery and insufficient budget in the health sector. At the same time, BJP MPs demanded verification of these claims. The government will now have to take concrete steps on issues like TB, malnutrition and medical education.
