Maha kumbhabhishekam in sree padmanabhaswamy temple: The famous Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala was organized on Sunday (June 8, 2025) at the famous Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple on Sunday (8 June 2025). Hundreds of devotees participated in it. This grand ritual took place after the completion of the long -pending renovation work in this ancient temple.
Temple sources said that in the morning, rituals were performed in the morning ‘Tajikakudams’ (three peaks above the sanctum sanctorum), re -establishment of Vishwaksen Vigraha and rituals related to the establishment of ‘Ashtbandha Kalasham’ in the Thiruvambadi Shri Krishna Temple (located in the main temple complex). He said, “The priests performed rituals in the auspicious time between 7.40 and 8.40 am on Sunday (June 8).”
Ritual started after worship on behalf of Travancore royal family
According to sources, the ritual started after offering prayers in the temple on behalf of the current chief Moolm Thirunal Ram Verma of the Travancore royal family. He said that in the presence of Verma and other members of the royal family, Tantri (Chief Priest) first performed the ritual of ‘Ashtbandha Kalasham’ at the Thiruvambadi temple.
According to temple sources, later at eight o’clock in the morning, the Deity of Vishwaksna (a form of Lord Vishnu) was re -established. He said that the Deity of Vishwaksen has been renovated and restored. This statue is about 300 years old and was constructed by the ‘Khatu Sarkar Yogam’ method, which is a traditional method made of a unique combination of materials for the construction of idols.
Arrangements were made to make devotees visit the rare rituals
Sources said that after re -establishing the Vishwaksen’s Deity, the tantri and other priests, along with the head of the royal family, proceeded as a procession to dedicate the peaks to the gods and during this time the devotees present chanting Narayan mantras. Temple authorities had put big screens at all four entrances of the temple to show the devotees a glimpse of this rare ritual. In order to witness this ritual, a long queue of devotees was seen at the entrances of the temple since morning.
The Governor of Kerala also attended the temple during rituals
Sources said, Kerala Governor Vishwanath Rajendra Arlekar was present in the temple to witness this rare ritual. He said that before Mahakubhabhishekam, other rituals were performed in the temple in different days from the last one week and other rituals including other rituals. Temple authorities said that the purpose of Mahakubhabhishek is to strengthen spiritual energy and re -awaken the sanctity of the temple.
He said, “This kind of widespread renovation and rituals related to it were organized in this centuries -old temple after a gap of 270 years and it is unlikely to happen again in the next several decades.”
The authorities said, “The renovation work was done in 2017 as per the instructions of the Specialist Committee appointed by the Supreme Court. However, the renovation work was soon started, but the Kovid epidemic delayed it.” He said that later various renewal works were completed in a phased manner from 2021.
