When Wil Young scored 107 runs against Pakistan on Wednesday, Tom Latham scored 118 runs. This is the first time in the history of the Champions Trophy when 2 batter of New Zealand has scored a century in a single match. This is also the first time that 2 batters scored a century in the very first match of the Champions Trophy.
The ICC Champions Trophy has been played since 1998. There was not a single match in the first two editions when two batter of a team scored centuries. The first such opportunity came in the year 2002, when Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly scored centuries against Sri Lanka. In the match played in Colombo, Sehwag scored 126 and Ganguly scored 117 runs.
This record of Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly was equaled by Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo in 2006. Gayle and Bravo scored centuries against England in Ahmedabad. After this, in 2009, Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting of Australia scored centuries in a single match. The feat of scoring two centuries in the same innings also took place in 2017.
