Pakistan was elected a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in January 2025 and now he has received the chairmanship of UNSC on Tuesday under rotation. It is chaired in alphabetic order between five permanent members of UNSC (USA, Russia, China, France and Britain) and 10 temporary members, ie 15 members of the council. Each member presides over for one month and Pakistan has received the month of July. As soon as the chairmanship is received, Pakistan has opened a front against India and once again has started the raga of the old Kashmir, which has always been saying that this is a bilateral issue.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Aseem Iftikhar Ahmed has said that UNSC should take necessary steps to resolve the Kashmir issue. Trying to internationalize bilateral case, the Pakistani envoy said that the disputed issue of Kashmir remains a matter of serious tension between India and Pakistan.
Speaking at the United Nations New York Headquarters, the Pakistani ambassador said, ‘The world now needs to work on this issue. This is the time to talk on the Kashmir issue and I would say that this is not just the responsibility of Pakistan … We are temporary here … Temporary members for two years. I believe that this issue is also about the Security Council, especially by the permanent members of the Council to take such steps to resolve this issue according to the provisions of the United Nations itself. This is the only way.’
Shimla agreement canceled and Pakistan’s cry over Kashmir
26 people were killed in the Pakistan Sponsor attack in Pahalgam on 22 April. In response, India suspended the Indus Water Agreement with Pakistan and started Operation Sindoor against the terrorists located in Pakistan and PoK.
After this, there was a four-day fight in India-Pakistan. After being badly beaten up in a struggle with India, Pakistan canceled the Shimla agreement with India. Under this agreement, it was decided that both countries would solve mutual matters in a bilateral manner.
It is another matter that even though Pakistan was in the agreement, the issue of Kashmir was raised many times on global forums. After canceling the Shimla Agreement, it has now got an open exemption to raise bilateral issues with India on international forums.
However, given the weak state of the United Nations, it does not seem that Pakistan will be very successful in internationalization of this matter. Anyway, the two axis of the world, America and Russia, who are also permanent members of UNSC, are close to India.
India has always been saying that the issue of Kashmir is its internal issue and Kashmir is an integral part of India, which should not be talked about. India clearly says that if there is talk with Pakistan, then there will be talk of returning the illegal occupied Kashmir of Pakistan to India. In such a situation, it does not seem that Pakistan will be able to succeed in its cause against India.
