The Supreme Court will hear the allegations of 13 women officers of the Indian Army’s Short Service Commission (SSC) on Wednesday. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati will present the central government in the court.
On September 18, women officers put the side in front of the bench of Justice Suryakant, Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh. It was said that they have been discriminated against by male officers in giving permanent commission.
Officials had said that despite equal contribution to campaigns like Galwan, Balakot and Operation Sindoor, it was arbitrary to give permanent commission.
Women officials had argued that our annual confidential report (ACR) was not judged like male officers. The ‘Criteria Appointments’ of the male officers was recorded in the official report, while despite our posting it was not mentioned in the ACR.
On this, the court had expressed surprise and said- Despite the same training and posting, how can there be two separate scales for male and female officers. Criteria appointments are recorded in male officers’ ACR, but it was ignored in the case of female officers.
Women officials told their contribution
- Lieutenant Colonel Vanita Padhi got the responsibility of Company Commander in the United Nations Peace Mission in Congo and Ferozepur (Punjab) border area.
- Lieutenant Colonel Chandni Mishra was the first female pilot in 88 countries to fly Meat (Manoeuvrable Expendable Aerial Target).
- Lieutenant Colonel Geeta Sharma was given the command of the Communication Unit during the Malwan operation in Ladakh.
- Lieutenant Colonel Swati Rawat was given commanding posting at Operation Sindoor and Counter Inspector Operations in Basauli, Jammu and Kashmir.
Supreme Court orders were ignored
On September 18, Senior Advocate V. Mohana argued to the bench that the Center has repeatedly ignored the Supreme Court’s 2020 and 2021 orders. The government made an excuse for lack of vacancy, while on several occasions the limit of 250 officers has also crossed.
Case foundation of case
In the Babita Punia case of 17 February 2020, the Supreme Court had described the refusal to give permanent commission to women as unconstitutional. After this, in the Nishita case of 2021, the court also ordered equal opportunity.
