On Tuesday (July 22, 2025), a day after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation from the post of Vice President, several opposition leaders surprised this unexpected decision. Discussions have intensified in the political corridors regarding the reasons for the resignation. Communist Party of India (CPI) Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar said that only Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah can tell the real reason for this resignation.

Dhankhar cited health reasons
Dhankhar sent his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu on Monday evening. In his letter, he wrote, ‘According to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution, I am resigning from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect.

Opposition raised questions- Is this really a health reason?

CPI leader P. Sandosh Kumar said that this can be just a pretense. He said, ‘There can be many other reasons for Dhankar’s resignation. He was conducting the House very actively. Certainly there will be some other reason behind the resignation. Only Modi and Shah can tell the real thing.

Samajwadi Party Bid- Everyone is surprised

Senior Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav said, ‘I cannot understand anything. He has resigned for health reasons, he has heard this. SP MP Awadhesh Prasad said, ‘This is a shocking decision. It was suddenly found out at night that the Vice President has resigned, while he was in the House yesterday. I am surprised and wish him good health.

Dhankar’s tenure was till 2027
74 -year -old Dhankhar took over the post of Vice President in August 2022 and his term was till 2027. He was also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His resignation came on the very first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. Recently he had an angioplasty in AIIMS, Delhi and was admitted to the hospital for a few days in March 2025.
